Waive this

Or, Don't Claim Randy Myers!!!

Here's a neat little article by David Lennon of Newsday discussing the post-July 31 waivers process and assorted tales of horror, including:

But the scariest cautionary tale was provided by Padres GM Kevin Towers, who claimed Toronto's Randy Myers to prevent the Braves from doing so in 1998. Not only was Myers out of gas by then, he
still had another two years and $12.25 million left on his contract, which San Diego got stuck with."That's why you have to be careful," said former Mets GM Jim Duquette, now the club's vice president of baseball operations. "It's got to be a contract you're willing to accept."

Lennon's article gets into the dynamics of the process but isn't too bogged down with detail. It's a good read.

(Obligatory hat tip to Baseball Primer.)

Comments:
And as Lennon mentions, that's how the Yankees got stuck with Jose Canseco a few years back. Man, was THAT entertaining.
